Provigil is a medication prescribed to promote wakefulness and cognitive enhancement in people with certain sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. It contains a drug called Modafinil, which acts on certain brain chemicals to alleviate excessive daytime sleepiness and improve alertness. Modafinil primarily blocks dopamine reuptake at the neuronal synapse resulting in increased concentrations of the dopamine neurotransmitter, similar to amphetamines and cocaine.
