Hydrocodone is an opioid pain medication that may be prescribed for short-term relief of moderate to severe pain caused by conditions such as shingles or a severe sprain when other pain medications are not sufficient. In the case of shingles, hydrocodone can help reduce acute pain during the active stage of the viral infection, but it does not treat the underlying virus. Antiviral medications are the primary treatment for shingles and are most effective when started early.
