This tartan's origin is uncertain. It's based on the story of MacDonald of Sleat. In the Ragman Roll of 1296, Kate Middleton Tartan of Kincardyn paid homage to Edward I of England, and the same year, Robert de Middleton was imprisoned in Dunbar Castle. In the 17th century, the family rose to prominence.
