The L/D ratio differs between single screw and twin screw extruders because their screw designs and processing functions are different. In a single screw extruder, the screw mainly performs conveying, melting, and pressure building. A suitable L/D ratio provides enough space for the material to melt properly and achieve consistent extrusion. In a twin screw extruder, the two screws work together to provide better conveying, mixing, melting, and homogenization. The screw configuration can therefore be designed with different processing zones depending on the material and application. Materials such as PVC, uPVC, and other formulations may require specific screw designs and L/D ratios to achieve proper processing. The ideal L/D ratio is not the same for every machine.
